Joni Chism

My work explores the relationship boundaries between life and death honoring the beauty found in celebratory occasions and solemn affairs. My work embraces everyday elegance and the elation of fine details while also focusing on the gritty reality of the everyday.

My work is created in charcoal and watercolor observing the immiscible properties of the two mediums and wresting coalescence. It often includes gold leaf and scrutinizes the dichotomy between drawing and oil painting that has existed since the Renaissance era.

It is my deepest desire that when viewing my work it speaks to your soul and beckons you to embrace life during it’s dark, gray and painful times; holding on to that spark of hope that joy and rainbows are to be found amidst the dark.
